Blog #3

At the end of The Fault In Our Stars, Augustus Walters has died. Hazel is lost and doesn't know what to do without her best friend and lover. Hazel then reads a letter Augustus wrote to Van Houten before he passed away. In the letter, Augustus ask Van Houten, the author of a book they both loved and that had no ending, to write an ending for Hazel. Augustus talks about how when Hazel was dieing and unconscious, he visited her in the hospital room and wouldn't leave. He talks about how he wants to be remembered but the marks people make are often scars. The book ends with the last sentence of the letter. She had to speak at his funeral and it was very hard for her. Someone she cared about was gone.

Why do you think people cry/feels sad when someone close to them dies?

Blog #2~Character

Hazel shut herself from the outside world. She rarely left her house, spent quite a lot of time in bed, read the same book over and over, ate infrequently, and devoted quite a bit of her abundant free time thinking about death. Hazel’s parents were there every step of the way but she didn’t want them in her life. She was scared that when she died, she would hurt them too much. She had a lot of friends in school. After she got cancer, she lost contact with most of them. Kaitlyn, one of her only friends, Hazel felt a certain unbridgeable distance between them. She thought her school friends wanted to help her through her cancer, but they eventually found out they couldn’t. Hazel let the Cancer take over her life. She let her friends slip away and she is slowly losing her parents.

Why do you think it is important to have good friends around you?

One night at a cancer kid support group meeting, two teenagers meet each other for the first time. Hazel Grace, a 16 year old girl with Terminal Thyroid cancer and Augustus Waters, a 17 year old boy short of one leg due to cancer decides to show up that night. They become good friends and start talking about everything. Hazel shares her favourite book, An Imperial Afflictions,  with Augustus and they both obsess about the unsolved ending. Hazel spent years trying to contact the Author, Peter Van Houten, of the book but no answer. Augustus Waters gets the attention of Peter Van Houten and invites Augustus and Hazel to amsterdam to tell them about the real ending of the book.

Both Augustus and Hazel have cancer and the Support group was meant for people with Cancer. Do things happen for a reason, or do things just… happen?
